Here are the first official glimpses of the Austin project that we started back in 2013, as seen in the New York Times. Feels great to see something we dreamed up actually come to life.
We chose Austin after doing extensive market research on every major city in the country, and fell in love with their outdoorsy culture. We located the property, just past the airport off highway 71, and put it under contract before we got the Coors family involved as the investor. We learned quite a bit from our 10 months living in Texas doing all the pre-development and entitlement work. We would have loved to see the project all the way through opening, but that wasn’t the case. Nland has since run into some trouble with Travis County with the classification of the wave pool, since the regulations aren’t yet in place to handle this new breed of surf park, which is a shame since we seemingly had everything on track when we were running the project, and the park itself has been ready to open since spring. We’ll be excited to see Nland finally open its doors, hopefully sometime very soon. In the meantime, the Honokea team has been hard at work getting more projects off the ground.
